(May 30, 2025) – Congresswoman-elect Leila de Lima has issued a strong statement on Thursday amid rumors that the impeachment proceedings against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte may not push through.
De Lima, a former senator and human rights lawyer, emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional processes, warning against abandoning a case before it is fully heard.
“To abandon the process is to abandon the people who still believe in the promise of justice,” she said.
The lawmaker, Mamamayang Liberal first nominee, is among those invited to join the House prosecution panel for the upcoming impeachment trial in the Senate.
She and fellow legal expert, Akbayan first nominee Chel Diokno have accepted the invitation. Both are frontrunners in their respective party-lists based on partial and unofficial counts.
“Kung talagang walang sapat na batayan ang mga akusasyon, ang ebidensya mismo ang magpapakita niyan. Hindi ang chismis, hindi ang takutan.”
“Panahon para muling itindig ang Saligang Batas. Panahon na para igiit na katotohanan ang dapat maging pundasyon ng ating pamahalaan,” she emphasized.
The Senate has rescheduled the presentation of the articles of impeachment from June 2 to June 11 to prioritize pending legislative measures before the 19th Congress adjourns, Senate President Chiz Escudero said.
VP Duterte is the first vice president in Philippine history to be impeached by the House of Representatives.
She faces multiple allegations, including threats against Pres. Bongbong Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, as well as the alleged misuse of P613-million in confidential funds during her time at the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Office of the Vice President (OVP).
The impeachment trial is set to begin in July, following the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA).
