(May 21, 2025) – The Department of Education (DepEd) will hire 16,000 public school teachers across the country as part of an initiative to ease overcrowding in classrooms and lighten the workload of teachers.
This follows the approval of additional teaching positions by Pres. Bongbong Marcos and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
The 16,000 new positions are part of the 20,000 teaching positions created under the FY 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
According to the agency, the 16,000 initial teaching will address the need for teachers with appropriate specializations, particularly in kindergarten, elementary, and subject-specific areas in junior and senior high school.
In line with this, Education Sec. Sonny Angara expressed gratitude to Pres. Marcos for his directive to ease the workload of teachers, and to Budget and Management Sec. Amenah Pangandaman for the swift and appropriate action in implementing the new teaching items.
“Pinasasalamatan natin ang Pangulong Marcos sa kaniyang malinaw na utos na unahin ang ating mga guro at mag-aaral. Direktang sagot ito sa kaniyang panawagan na babaan ang class sizes at pagaanin ang trabaho ng mga guro sa mga paaralan,” said Angara.
According to DepEd, by adding more teachers, the Department aims to gradually improve the teacher-student ratio and class sizes that is an important factor in enhancing learning outcomes.
To ensure that all new teaching positions are filled by the end of the third quarter, DepEd has directed its Schools Division Offices (SDOs) to immediately begin the publication, hiring, and appointment processes upon receipt of the Notices of Organization, Staffing, and Compensation Action (NOSCA) from DBM regional offices.
Meanwhile, aside from the 16,000 new teaching positions, DepEd also stated that the DBM has begun issuing NOSCAs for 10,000 Administrative Officer II positions to help ease the non-teaching workload of public school teachers.
