DepEd told to speed up hiring of teachers, staff amid shortage

(September 15, 2024) – Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian on Sunday reiterated his call on the Department of Education (DepEd) to expedite its hiring process for teachers and non-teaching staff to address the country’s increasing shortage of educators.

In a statement, Gatchalian expressed concern over the hiring delays, which can take up to six months due to the involvement of multiple government agencies.

“Lumalaki ang bilang ng mga gurong kinakailangan natin kasabay ng pagdami ng mga mag-aaral, at kung mapupunan natin ang 26,000 na mga bakanteng posisyon, malaki ang maitutulong nito upang tugunan ang kakulangan natin sa mga guro,” said Gatchalian.

According to him, 58% of the 46,700 job vacancies in the DepEd are teaching posts, as of May.

He added that while next year’s National Expenditure Program allocates P5.50 billion to create 20,000 new teaching positions, the DepEd still needs an additional 56,050 teachers, which would require a budget of P15.4 billion.

Last March, Gatchalian recommended “decentralizing” the hiring process to speed up the filling of teaching positions. This was after the DepEd, which was then headed by Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio, admitted that the teacher shortage in the country reached 58,000.

According to DepEd secretary Sonny Angara, the teacher shortage has been made worse by educators leaving for retirement, better job opportunities abroad, and limited career growth, among others.

The current starting salary for public school teachers is P27,000.

Gatchalian also stressed the need for more administrative officers to ease the non-teaching workload that has burdened educators.

“Sa susunod na taon, magha-hire tayo ng 10,000 administrative officers, at dahil meron tayong humigit-kumulang 43,000 na mga paaralan, isa sa apat ng mga paaralan natin ang magkakaroon na ng administrative officers,” added Gatchalian.
