(December 21, 2024) – A civil society group has voiced strong opposition to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) newly unveiled designs for polymer banknotes, set for release in 2025. The updated currency features images of animals and plants instead of the faces of national heroes and martyrs.
“Are we better off forgetting them [our national heroes]? Are they trying to make us forget that the blood of heroes runs in our veins so they can replace it with the blood of slaves and let tyrants rule again?,” August Twenty-One Movement (ATOM) said in a statement.
“Former President Manuel Quezon lobbied for Philippine independence from the Americans, but died before seeing his effort come to fruition. Quezon’s image used to be on our twenty-peso bill, now twenty-peso coin.”
Acknowledging other heroes featured in the old banknotes like Jose Abad Santos, Josefa Llanes Escoda, and Vicente Lim, the group added, “all fought the Japanese and died resisting them during World War II. Their faces used to be on our one-thousand peso bill until they were removed and replaced by the Philippine eagle in 2022.”
This move has also drawn criticism from historians, and the public, who view it as a step toward erasing the memory of the country’s historical figures.
Historians argue that the inclusion of heroes on banknotes serves as a daily reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom.
Professor Xiao Chua pointed out that removing the images of Philippines’ national heroes deprives Filipinos of a vital connection to their history.
“Mangyayari ngayon ‘pag tinanggal mo ‘yung mga personalidad sa pera ‘yung mga bayani, ‘yung mga presidente, parang tinanggalan mo ng history lesson ‘yung mga ordinaryong Pilipino at mahihirapan na tayong ipaalala ano yung kasaysayan natin,” he said.
The BSP explained that the old paper banknotes are still in circulation and national heroes will remain featured on coins. The goal of the new banknotes, they said, is to promote the preservation of the Philippines’ biodiversity.
“It is also the position of BSP that both featuring our national heroes and biodiversity of the Philippines are both equally important for public awareness. We want to promote public awareness and environmental responsibility for flora and fauna,” BSP Currency and Securities Production Sub-sector Assistant Governor Mary Anne Lim said.
Despite assurances that older notes featuring heroes will remain legal tender, ATOM and other critics argue that this shift diminishes the significance of the nation’s martyrs.
The redesigned banknotes will enter circulation in Metro Manila next week and expand nationwide in 2025, sparking an ongoing debate about the country’s historical identity.
