(July 18, 2024) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday checked in on its officials and personnel to remind them to uphold the dignity of the agency.
During a command visit in Laguna, PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and honor of law enforcers.
“Ang marching order ko lang, just do your job. Ang pagiging pulis, isa lang talaga ‘yung pulis. Once you join the PNP, we only have one surname, it’s only the PNP. So huwag nating yurakan, huwag nating dumihan,” said Marbil.
His statement came amid a series of controversies recently involving PNP personnel.
Last Thursday, the PNP identified former police officer Michael Guiang as the primary suspect in the abduction and murder of beauty queen Geneva Lopez and her boyfriend Yitshak Cohen in Tarlac. Another unidentified former police officer was also allegedly involved. The PNP has yet to disclose the motive for the crime.
Last May, nine members of the PNP Special Action Force were relieved for moonlighting as bodyguards in Muntinlupa.
The confusing leadership changes in the Davao City Police Office also raised eyebrows, with three chiefs appointed in a day. This came amid the continued evasion of fugitive Apollo Quiboloy, who hails from Davao City.
Last October, another beauty queen, Catherine Camilon, also went missing in Batangas. Witnesses reported seeing three men, including Maj. Allan De Castro, transferring her body to another vehicle.
De Castro was dismissed following the allegations. However, prosecutors in Laguna later dropped the kidnapping and illegal detention charges against him due to insufficient evidence.
Marbil reminded police officers that they always carry the name of the PNP, noting that the public’s trust in the agency is affected whenever its image is tarnished.
“Ang mga tao wala naman ibang pagsusumbungan. We want to have a country na may demokrasya at mayroong batas na ipinatutupad,” said Marbil.
Last week, Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. vetoed a bill aimed at reforming the PNP, citing inconsistencies with government policies and potential security risks.
