DOH says health worker shortage hinders national health goals

(June 14, 2024) — The Department of Health (DOH) is grappling with a severe shortage of health workers, which poses a significant obstacle to achieving the country’s health goals.

Health Sec. Ted Herbosa highlighted the urgent need for 190,000 healthcare workers to address this gap.

The shortage of nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers is a major hindrance to the DOH’s plans to make the Philippines one of the healthiest nations by 2040.

Further, Sec. Herbosa pointed out that putting up numerous health programs have been been stalled due to the lack of manpower.

Listed as a primary factor contributing to this shortage is the migration of Filipino health workers to other countries offering higher salaries. This exodus has left local healthcare facilities understaffed and strained, impacting the quality of healthcare services available to Filipinos.

Moreover, to combat this issue, the DOH is studying potential measures to retain health workers and attract more professionals to the sector. Solutions under consideration include improving compensation packages and providing better working conditions to make local opportunities more attractive.

The department’s current efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure that all Filipinos have access to quality medical care. As the nation looks towards its 2040 health goals, addressing the health worker shortage remains a critical priority for the government.

Herbosa emphasized the importance of immediate and sustained action to resolve this issue, ensuring that the country’s health infrastructure can meet the demands of its population.
