(May 31, 2021) – Donations for the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), which caught fire recently, continue to pile on as it received generous aid from NBA superstar Damian Lillard.
On Sunday, Ang Probinsyano Rep. Ronnie Ong and actress Yassi Pressman visited PGH to turn over the donations they collected, including the cash assistance from the Portland Trail Blazers guard, to help the affected patients.
“PGH needs our help to buy new equipment and repair their building structures. But what’s most important is that no lives were lost. Hanga talaga tayo sa galing at tapang ng health workers natin na nagligtas sa mga pasyente lalo na sa NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) babies,” said Ong in a statement.
A fire broke out last May 16 on the third floor of PGH, where medical tools and equipment were stored and sterilized. All the patients near the fire were immediately evacuated to safety. Around 35 newborns admitted at the NICU were rescued and temporarily relocated. With the swift action of the hospital staff and even some patients, no casualties or injuries were reported.
With PGH’s sterilization unit razed by the fire, the hospital chapel became a refuge for babies in critical care, much to the awe of PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario.
“It was probably an act of God that the chapel is a nice place for them to rest. The chapel became an instant nursery and a pediatric ward. And it was quite warm there. We were able to put some sicker babies in the ward,” said Del Rosario in an interview with One News’ The Chiefs last May 17.
Around P60 million in damages to equipment, infrastructure, and supplies were tallied, prompting PGH, which is also the country’s biggest COVID-19 referral facility, to tap other hospitals for support and to call for cash donations.
With the combined efforts of Pressman and Lillard, their donations have amounted to over P1 million.
“Tuluy-tuloy kaming nagpupugay sa healthcare workers at frontliners na mabilis na umaksyon upang mailipat sa ligtas na lugar ang mga pasyente. Saludo kami sa inyo,” said Pressman.
Pressman expressed gratitude on Instagram to all those who helped her get ample donations for PGH, including Lillard. He and Pressman are fellow endorsers of a giant sports apparel brand.
“Also, huge thank you to big brother @damianlillard for sending over such a generous amount, kahit na wala siya sa Pilipinas, just to be able to help,” posted Pressman.
Lillard has already visited the Philippines twice, first in 2014 as part of an exhibition game and again in 2016 for a two-day promotion of his signature sneakers.
The six-time All-Star has also been one of the leading voices in the NBA when it comes to taking action in helping society.
“Being somebody that uses my platform and has actually been out there literally marching, you look around and just think. I’m not sure exactly what to do going forward, but I think whatever it is, it has to be with action,” said Lillard in an interview with The Undefeated last January.
