(June 2, 2025) – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Monday confirmed it is reviewing the timeline for the planned rehabilitation of EDSA following Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s call to minimize public inconvenience.
Sec. Manny Bonoan said they are now reassessing how to speed up the project without causing too much disruption.
“We would like to see kung how are we going to expedite the process, as the President instructed us to take a second look on how we will be able to shorten the implementation period, lalo na if we will look at the practices of developed countries and materials na available sa construction industry,” said Secretary Bonoan on One PH’s One Balita Pilipinas.
President Marcos on Sunday ordered a temporary suspension of the P8.7-billion rehabilitation plan to give agencies more time to “find a better way” to repair the decades-old highway.
Following the President’s directive, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) also decided to cancel the implementation of the controversial odd-even traffic scheme along EDSA this month.
The EDSA rehabilitation project includes concrete reblocking, new asphalt for damaged portions, road widening, sidewalk improvements, drainage upgrades, better lighting and signage, and maintenance work on bridges and flyovers.
Secretary Bonoan explained the original timeline was based on the recommendation of a tri-agency task force composed of the DPWH, the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the MMDA. He said traffic management plans had already been part of the early stages of planning.
However, he acknowledged the President granted a one-month window for further evaluation after the public raised several concerns.
“We will do the best that we can. We all have the basic information and original proposal dito. It’s a matter of fine-tuning ‘yung lahat ng napag-usapan namin,” he said. “Sa amin naman sa DPWH, we have to review ang timeline namin.”
According to the DOTr, the overhaul will be the first major rehabilitation of EDSA — Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfare — in nearly five decades.
