MAY 20, 2019 — As the term of incumbent House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo nears its end, newly elected representatives are already lining up to vie for the House speakership role.
In a campaign rally, Hugpong ng Pagbabago chairman Sara Duterte-Carpio had casually introduced Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez as the next House speaker. Lakas Rep. Prospero Pichay is confident Romualdez will be able to get the votes for the position.
“I think marami ng nagjo-join kay Martin, I just don’t know the figure but it’s definitely beyond 40. So mag-meeting ang partylist, they vote as a block, around 59 sila…so malaking bloke yan,” said Pichay.
Duterte-Carpio also endorses PDP-Laban member and Marinduque Congressman Allan Velasco for the speakership role. PDP-Laban members Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Dong Gonzales and Cavite Rep. Aurelio Advincula are also vying for the position.
Meanwhile, Taguig congressman-elect Alan Peter Cayetano of the Nacionalista Party has also announced his intentions to vie for the speakership role.
“Anyone who is elected congressman can be the next speaker. But I will fight for it,” said Cayetano.
Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) members, on the other hand, say they are ready to back up former senator and Antique representative-elect Loren Legarda should she plan to throw her name in the hat.
But ousted speaker Pantaleon Alvarez says he is still determined to get back the position he lost to Speaker Arroyo: “I will give it a try. Gusto kong makatulong sa administration.”
