(September 20, 2024) – Progressive groups on Friday warned that the legacy of Martial Law may persist among future generations if Filipinos continuously ignore the lessons from history.
In Defense of Human Rights and Dignity Movement (iDefend) likened the administration of Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. to his late dictator father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., saying corruption, poor quality of public services, and plundering of public funds remain prevalent.
“Patuloy na balikan ang kasaysayan, matuto mula sa maraming karanasan. Tuloy ang laban hanggang sa pagtatagumpay ng mga usapin ng mamamayan!” said iDefend in a joint statement with other sectoral organizations on the eve of the 52nd anniversary of Martial Law.
The elder Marcos declared Martial Law by signing Proclamation 1081 on September 21, 1972, citing the “communist threat” in the country, deeming the necessity of an authoritarian government. It came after the alleged ambush attempt against then-defense secretary Juan Ponce Enrile.
Enrile later admitted that the attack was fake.
Martial Law was a dark chapter in the country’s history due to human rights violations, cronyism, corruption, historical revisionism, and media censorship.
The return to power of the younger Marcos in 2022 spurred fear among historians and sectoral groups that he would whitewash his family’s atrocities and kleptocratic rule.
“Naniwala ang marami sa Tallano Gold, sa 20 pesos per kilo ng bigas, malalim na nakabaon sa kultura natin ang traditional politicking at hindi nagsisiyasat, naniniwala sa sabi-sabi at misimpormasyon,” said Youth for Nationalism and Democracy.
Martial Law saw the Marcoses gain more power and acquire more ill-gotten wealth, while many Filipinos were left struggling with economic hardships, which were also caused by the heavy-handed rule.

According to Amnesty International, over 32,000 were killed, around 70,000 people were imprisoned, and 34,000 were tortured during Martial Law.
Partido Manggagawa, meanwhile, blasted the “Bagong Pilipinas” of the current administration, stressing that it’s merely similar to the “Bagong Lipunan” during the dictatorial regime.
“Ang sitwasyon ng karapatang pantao ay maaaring ibang iba sa intensity at laki. Gayunpaman, isang bagay ang nananatiling pareho: Ang pagpapakita ng maluhong pamumuhay ng unang pamilya sa gitna ng pagtaas ng halaga ng bilihin,” said Partido Manggagawa.
