(April 28, 2021) – A mother and her young child were killed as a fire broke out in a residential area in Santa Cruz, Manila after midnight on Wednesday.
Frencelyn Batol and her seven-year-old daughter Precious Victoria tried to escape from the window of their burning apartment unit on Elias Street, Brgy. 352, but eventually got trapped as the growing fire engulfed them.
“‘Yung bata nandito na siya sa bintana. Nung binugahan nila (bumbero), ‘yung nanay na nakahawak doon sa may bakal, natumba na. Pero sunog na siya nung makita namin. Hindi ko masabing buhay pa ‘yung bata kasi nakabaluktot, pero kulay brown na siya,” said barangay chairman Roderick Suarez.
The cause of the fire is said to be an aircon explosion in one of the four apartment units, but barangay officials remain unsure.
“Siguro faulty wiring, bumigay na ‘yung aircon,” said Suarez.
The fire reached the second alarm before it was completely put out.
Another fire also broke out in nearby Tondo, Manila at around 2 am on Wednesday, but luckily, no one was killed.
A fire burned from the second floor of the house of Norma Agulan in Brgy. 48. It quickly spread as the other shelters in the area were made of light materials.
Residents were quick to remove the LPG tanks from a nearby store to avoid an explosion and even further damage.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire was not contained immediately as well due to the lack of water in the fire hydrants.
“Isa sa mga nagiging problema kasi ’yung ibang mga hydrant, mahina. Talagang sa konsumo ng tubig (ng firetruck), sa laki, madaling maubos. Tapos dapat mag-refiill ulit,” said BFP senior inspector Gaudencio Magallanes.
The fire reached the third alarm and was completely extinguished past 5 am. It left up to P500,000 in property damage, while only a few had minor injuries.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the BFP.
Affected residents will temporarily remain in the covered court of the barangay.
“Nananawagan kami ng tulong kahit kina Congressman Manny Lopez, kay Mayor (Isko Moreno) para at least maalalayan natin ‘yung mga residente natin,” said barangay chairman Jose Cornelio Dela Reyna.
