FRESH CASES | DFA reports eight more Filipinos in cruise ship contracted the virus
February 22, 2020 , 03:30 PM

February 22, 2020 – The foreign affairs official on Saturday reported eight more Filipinos aboard a luxury cruise ship have been infected by the corona virus disease (COVID-19), bringing the number to 49 people as authorities postponed a scheduled repatriation of about 400 Filipino passengers and crew from Japan.

In s tweeter post on Saturday, Undersecretary Brigido Dulay said all the infected Filipino crew of Diamond Princess have been taken to medical facilities for treatment.

Dulay said two of the infected Filipinos had been discharged after they were declared COVID-free.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. has expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for giving medical assistance to Filipinos on board affected by the virus.

“They are so lucky to be in the care of Japanese health authorities,” Locsin said in a Tweet.

“Thank you Japan. You didn’t just anticipate the needs but went out of your way with exceeding care,” he added.

RESCHEDULED EVACUATION

The Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF-EID) has also reset the evacuation of more than 400 Filipinos marooned on the quarantined ship early next week to allow Japanese health officials to complete the testing of the Filipinos aboard.

The initial schedule of bringing home the evacuees was on Sunday, February 23, after the IATF-EID approved the repatriation plan of Filipinos aboard the virus-hit cruise ship.

“IATF-EID is adjusting the schedule out of an abundance of caution with a view to safeguarding the health and safety of our Overseas Filipinos (OFs) onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship,” the Department of Health said.

The British-flagged Diamond Princess, operated by Carnival Corporation arrived in Yokohama on February 3 with about 3,700 people onboard. (Juno Buena/MM)
