(December 2, 2021) – Vice President Leni Robredo can help improve the country’s economic situation after a slump due to the COVID-19 crisis if she wins as president in the 2022 elections, Sen. Franklin Drilon said on Thursday, backing the candidacy of his close ally.
Drilon, the minority floor leader, remained confident that Robredo will restore good governance given her background in civil society work before entering the political arena.
“Vice President Leni Robredo can get our national and local economy back on track,” said Drilon in a statement addressed to the citizens in his home province of Iloilo. “A lawyer, an economist, and a social worker, Robredo will restore good governance that made us achieve unprecedented development.”
Robredo, an independent presidential candidate, will visit Iloilo on Friday for a political event. Like her opponents, Robredo has been making rounds in various provinces to reach out to communities even if the official campaign period for national candidates will only begin in February.
Drilon and Robredo are close allies under the Liberal Party.
If Robredo gets elected, Drilon believes his home province would likely benefit through various projects on infrastructure and development. Economists have projected a slow recovery for the country after its economy slumped 9.5% in 2020.
“The pandemic has stymied our development,” said Drilon. “There’s more to be done and the development of Iloilo remains a work in progress. What we need is a leader who will support our vision and help us attain new heights of economic and social success.”
In October, Robredo promised to continue the Build, Build, Build program of President Rodrigo Duterte but she said it would mostly focus on helping alleviate poverty, citing farm-to-market roads and cold storage facilities as examples.
“Sisiguruhin natin na ‘yung pupuntahan ng pera para sa infrastructure, mayroon itong direct impact sa pag-angat noong mga nasa laylayan,” said Robredo in Sorsogon.
Duterte has funneled large sums of public funds to the infrastructure projects under his centerpiece policy, allocating P1 trillion in 2022. But critics slammed the limited benefit the public has gained from the big-ticket projects, lamenting the disconnect with people’s actual needs.
Drilon, the Senate President from 2013 to 2016, also recalled the pet projects he carried out under the term of the late former President Noynoy Aquino III.
But Drilon also got embroiled in controversies related to some projects, particularly the P700-million Iloilo Convention Center. He faced a plunder case due to alleged overpricing of around P488 million but the Office of the Ombudsman dismissed it in 2015 due to insufficient evidence.
“Iloilo’s economy can get a fresh start when we can have a leader that we can really depend on,” said Drilon. “We achieved so much in the past years because of good governance that should be the hallmark of every administration.”
