GRIM RECORD | Number of COVID-19 infections in PH jumps to 1,075
March 28, 2020 , 07:04 PM

(March 28, 2020) — The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country has breached the 1,000 mark on Saturday, after the health department reported a record 272 new infections.

The huge spike, almost triple this past week’s average daily tally, brings the total number of coronavirus cases to 1,075, while the death toll has climbed to 68 after 14 new deaths were recorded. The total number of recoveries total 35.

Despite the notable increase, health authorities again thumbed down the growing demand for mass testing, saying the government still lacks the resources to carry out such a logistically daunting policy.

They have also warned of the big jump in the daily number of positive results, attributing it to the increased testing capacity of the country.

The entire island of Luzon has been on lockdown for two weeks as the government struggles to “flatten the curve” and halt the spread of the virus that has affected 202 countries and territories worldwide.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), meanwhile, reported 280 COVID-19 cases among Filipinos abroad.

Currently, there are 130 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among OFWs in the Asia Pacific region, 47 in the Middle East and Africa, 81 in Europe, and 22 in the Americas.

Out of the 280 confirmed cases, 168 are currently receiving medical treatment and 108 have already recovered and discharged from hospitals. The remaining four have died from the virus. (Roy Narra/JMF)
