(October 28, 2024) – Progressive groups on Monday slammed Sen. Bato Dela Rosa for being an interpellator during the investigation of the Senate regarding the brutal war on drugs of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Kabataan Party-list stressed that Dela Rosa should not be asking questions since he was involved in the cruel policy.
“It is unfair that he is allowed to ask questions to families or representatives of drug war victims, when in fact siya ang chief implementor ng drug war!” said Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel in a statement. “‘Di dapat siya hayaan na abusuhin ang posisyon bilang senador para sa sariling interes!”
Dela Rosa served as the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) at the height of Duterte’s bloody war on drugs.
Manuel also blasted Dela Rosa for his supposed gaslighting during the hearing.
“Tinawag pa niyang propaganda ang paglalahad ng defenders ng drug war victims! Nakakagalit! The Senate should not allow this!” added Manuel.
Dela Rosa dismissed the claims of Fr. Flaviano Villanueva as “propaganda,” adding that the priest should have filed cases over the alleged killings.
Villanueva, who assists families of victims of extrajudicial killings, said at least 3,600 individuals were killed in the first 100 days of Duterte’s iron-fisted rule.
Akbayan Party-list, meanwhile, hit Dela Rosa for his PNP Command Memorandum Circular 16-2016, which allegedly ordered police officers to kill drug suspects.
“Ang utos ay gumamit ng drug list para tugisin ang mga sangkot umano sa mga ilegal na droga,” said Akbayan first nominee Chel Diokno. “Mismong sa purpose ng circular nakalagay na dapat i-neutralize ang mga illegal drug personalities sa buong Pilipinas.”
According to Akbayan, the directive laid the foundation for Dela Rosa’s “Project Double Barrel,” which aimed to fulfill Duterte’s vow to eliminate drugs and criminality in his first six months as president.

Duterte, Dela Rosa, and Sen. Bong Go are being investigated by the quad committee of the House of Representatives due to the alleged reward system for police officers for killing drug suspects.
