(June 14, 2021) – Following the announcement of 1SAMBAYAN’s possible candidates for the 2022 elections, a political analyst on Monday expressed her disappointment over the picks, calling some of them “stale.”
Prof. Clarita Carlos of the University of the Philippines’ Department of Political Science told One News’ Agenda that some names that the politicians released by 1SAMBAYAN were all too familiar and did not create any buzz.
“I would consider the names that they had put for are some stale. Like panis. I’m sorry to use that cruel word. It’s like pagkatingin ko ng pangalan, parang gusto kong humikab. Parang ‘Wow, ito ba ‘yung pinangangalandakan niyo?” said Carlos.
Carlos added that 1SAMBAYAN’s announcement of endorsed candidates last Saturday may have already violated election laws.
“Don’t you think this is part of campaigning? It’s like the absurd reaction of Comelec (Commission on Elections) na ‘No, that’s not a violation because they have not filed their candidacy.’ How absurd is that?” said Carlos.
On Independence Day, 1SAMBAYAN released its list of potential bets for the 2022 elections, including Vice President Leni Robredo, former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Sen. Grace Poe, Citizens’ Battle Against Corruption Rep. Eddie Villanueva, Atty. Chel Diokno, and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto.
Except for Robredo and Trillanes, everyone has already officially backed out, saying they would rather focus on their current work.
“I look at names I know there, they’re practically elites. These are oligarchs and you know the larger part of our population really does not belong to that particular group,” said Carlos. “You cannot take a stance and label everybody else and tire everybody else with an evil or bad brush. It doesn’t work that way.”
Carlos advised 1SAMBAYAN to reflect on its strategy and be more inclusive.
“I’ll tell them to get off your high horse please and talk to the people kasi ‘yang mga salitang ginagamit niyong mabulaklak, wala na, nakakayamot na. Let’s have something new,” said Carlos. “I’m sure I’m not alone in that kind of reaction.”
1SAMBAYAN, which was launched last March with the aim of forming a unified opposition to topple the current administration, has clarified that the names announced were only nominees and not yet final.
“1SAMBAYAN supports our nominees’ desire to think, weigh, and discern if it is truly their personal mission to be in positions of power. It is not an easy decision to make. After all, true servant leadership is a challenging vocation,” said 1SAMBAYAN in a statement on Sunday.
