(FEBRUARY 14, 2020) – A lower court on Friday ordered the arrest of a former senator and 10 others for allegedly conspiring to incite a popular uprising to overthrow President Rodrigo Duterte last year.
The Quezon City trial court issued arrest warrants against former senator Antonio Trillanes IV—a staunch critic of the President—two Catholic priests, a police officer, and seven others for producing a series of video, which was posted on social media maligning the President and his family by linking them to the illegal drug trade.
The court also set a 10,000 peso bail for each of the accused for their temporary liberty.
Four of the accused have already posted bail, and Trillanes promised to do the same when he returns from a foreign visit.
The other accused were Peter “Bikoy” Advincula, Jonnell Sanggalang, JM Saracho, Eduardo Acierto, Vicente Romano, A certain “Monique,” Fr. Flaviano Villanueva, Fr. Albert Alejo, Yoly Ong-Villanueva, and Boom Enriquez.
“I will face this case just as I have faced all the other harassment cases Duterte’s minions have filed against me,” Trillanes said in a statement.
The Department of Justice had found probable cause to file sedition charges on a local court against 11 people but cleared Vice President Leni Robredo, and senators Leila de Lima and Risa Hontiveros—all opposition leaders.
The case stemmed from a series of videos produced by Advincula, called “Ang Totoong Narcolist,” to boost the opposition’s chances in last May’s mid-term elections.
All eight opposition candidates lost, including then-incumbent senator Bam Aquino.
Lawyer Larry Gadon said Advincula will post bail next week. (Randell Ritumalta/MM)
