(November 24, 2021) – The government’s sports commission has started dialogues with all parties, including the national athletics association, involved in the reported falsification of liquidation of expenses by a national athlete as criticisms grew over neglect of local athletes.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on Wednesday said it will not take lightly the controversy after pole vaulter EJ Obiena was accused by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) of keeping the money meant to be paid for his Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov.
Petrov said he has already received his coaching fee in full.
The PSC will only intervene “when appropriate,” dismissing criticisms that they were taking a “hands-off” approach to the issue.
“While we wish for the matter to be handled with confidentiality, we are bound by duty to mediate and call both parties to the table in the interest of truth and arresting the damage this tussle has done on our country’s image in the international sporting world,” PSC said in a statement.
It ordered all the parties concerned to refrain from issuing public statements on social media, hoping that this will help the dialogues prosper and allow all parties to arrive at a proper resolution.
“Should this option fail, we regret that the PSC shall be constrained to implement actions that would negatively redound to the concerned federation with regard to financial assistance,” PSC said.
Obiena on Sunday expressed dismay over PATAFA’s accusation that he owed the federation €85,000 (P4.8 million) for falsifying his liquidation documents.
Responding to Petrov’s clarification, PATAFA insisted that Obiena had paid his coaching fee late. Obiena confirmed this, but he questioned the federation’s shifting statements and asserted that his mistake to pay on time was not a crime.
Lawmakers and members of the sports community called out PSC over its earlier statement on Obiena’s issue, warning that the Philippines will lose another athlete if they don’t address the issue fast. Senators on Tuesday threatened to remove PSC’s 2022 budget if Obiena continues to face harassment over the issue.
“Sabi lang nila (PSC), “Work it out.” How can you do that to your national athlete? Work it out? Pakialaman mo naman. Bigyan mo naman ng halaga ang ating national athlete na inakusahan na lang ng ganun ganun na lang,” Senator Pia Cayetano said in a public hearing.
PSC said they will issue an update once the dialogues resolve positively, and all parties involved reach a settlement.
“We shall not allow this to spoil the successful gains of the Philippines in sports. Let this year remain with the glorious glow of the golden victories of our sports heroes,” PSC said.
