(March 20, 2024) – Filipinos on Tuesday sounded the alarm over the violent killing of a dog in Camarines Sur, taking to social media their call to end all forms of cruelty against animals.
Killua, a golden retriever, was beaten to death and was placed in a sack afterward by a neighbor, who was identified as Anthony Solares. A now-viral CCTV video of the gruesome attack showed that Killua was trying to run away from Solares but it was unable to escape.
Vina Rachelle, the fur parent of Killua, posted on Facebook last Sunday to call for justice.
In another post last Monday, she thanked the people who showed their support and assured them that necessary steps are being taken to hold Solares accountable for his cruel act on Killua.
“I cannot disclose any information pero I promise na makakamit natin ‘yung hustisya para sa fur baby ko at para rin matigil na ang pag-abuso at pagkatay sa dogs dito sa lugar namin,” said Vina Rachelle.
In an interview, Solares admitted to the violent killing of Killua but claimed that he only did it to protect an elderly woman after the dog allegedly bit her. He added that the dog also bit him.
But Vina Rachelle doubted the claims of Solares, noting the gentle nature of Killua in the three years that he was with them. She also noted that Killua never bit anyone.
Assuming that Killua indeed bit someone, she pointed out that “it is not enough reason to kill my pet.” She said Solares wanted to apologize but she stressed that “no sorry could ever replace my baby,” referring to Killua.
She also confirmed that they already talked to someone from the Philippine Animal Welfare Society. Animal welfare groups likewise echoed the call for justice after the horrible fate suffered by Killua.
“Cruelty does not know size or breed, only indifference, ignorance, and disregard for another being’s life and welfare. This is a reminder of why we need to advocate for a better animal welfare law,” said the Animal Kingdom Foundation.

Showbiz personalities also lamented the ruthless killing of Killua, doubling down on the need to probe the case and ensure accountability.
This news is extremely heartbreaking. Walang kalaban-laban ‘yung aso. Katulad nating mga tao, nakakaramdam din sila ng takot at sakit. Every life deserves respect and protection. It’s time to demand accountability and raise our voices against animal cruelty.

Artists also shared their creations on social media to join the call for justice.
Run free, #Killua. You were nothing but a heart of gold
It feels so disheartening after hearing, and seeing, the news about what happened to Killua. He’s not only just any other animal, he’s treasured, and he’s part of a family. #JusticeForKillua pic.twitter.com/FGUI8C86KK

Lawmakers reiterated that the law prohibits such kind of cruelty against animals.
Sen. Grace Poe, who’s pushing for a revision of the Animal Welfare Act, said the law must be updated to “put an end to despicable incidents such as what happened to Killua,” acknowledging that many other animals are facing similar threats.
“If we are to create a kinder society where animals and humans can co-exist in harmony, we must raise awareness on the proper, responsible, and humane manner of treating animals,” said Poe.
