(July 2, 2021) – A progressive organization on Thursday reiterated its call to arrest Lieutenant Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. and the abolition of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).
Kabataan slammed Parlade’s resignation, saying this preempts the possible defunding or complete abolishment of NTF-ELCAC following the public backlash regarding its notorious red-tagging.
“Sinadya ni Parlade na patagong mag-resign dahil kahiya-hiya naman talaga ang ginagawa nila sa NTF-ELCAC: Ang pag-aksaya ng pera ng bayan para mag-mass produce ng mga gawa-gawang kaso na binabasura rin mismo ng DOJ (Department of Justice),” said Kabataan spokesperson Raoul Manuel in a statement.
Kabataan also rued the number of lives lost during the anti-insurgency drive of NTF-ELCAC, stressing Parlade, who was usually at the forefront of the heightened attacks, and other officials must be punished.
“Ang paulit-ulit nilang pangre-red-tag sa mga mamamayan ay nagdulot na ng maraming kaso ng intimidasyon, iligal na pag-aresto at pagpatay, at dapat may angkop na kaparusahan sa mga ito. Ikulong sina Parlade at iba pang NTF-ELCAC officials,” said Manuel.
The Malacañang on Thursday said President Rodrigo Duterte has accepted the resignation of Parlade as spokesperson of NTF-ELCAC.
While many believe that he was forced to resign due to mounting criticisms, Parlade maintained that his decision was spurred by his hope to ease the pressure on NTF-ELCAC as a whole. He also defended his allegedly baseless claims on communist groups.
“This issue is being raised dun sa (Senate) committee kaya sila ang pressured—I’m not,” said Parlade on One PH’s Wag Po. “I don’t say anything there that’s not vetted by the national task force. It’s never about the statement I made, lahat ng statements ko there’s basis.”
Parlade will reach his mandatory retirement age of 56 on July 26. His position as spokesperson of NTF-ELCAC has been repeatedly questioned since an active member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines cannot hold a government position.
Kabataan said the continued red-tagging of Parlade and NTF-ELCAC, which has even included attacks on celebrities such as Angel Locsin, Catriona Gray, and Liza Soberano, has resulted in real dangers for student leaders and human rights advocates.
“He (Parlade) has been at the forefront of brazen red-tagging and terror-tagging and has used his position to sow fear among the critics of the government especially the youth. He must be stopped and held accountable,” said Manuel. (PM)
