DECEMBER 24, 2019 — At least a dozen people had died after downing a coconut-based liquor, popularly known as lambanog, during a birthday party in a province south of the capital Manila, a local government official said on Tuesday.
Rizal town Mayor Vener Munoz said about 50 others are still confined at Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila and another victim is in comatose at Batangas Medical Center.
More people who were suspected to have been poisoned by methanol mixed in the coconut-based liquor have been brought to hospitals for tests, he added.
Rizal town in the coconut-growing Laguna province has been placed under a state of calamity.
There are confusion on the number of deaths due to methanol poisoning, Munoz said as he called on the public to pay attention only to official announcement from authorities.
“Sana ‘wag na [magkalat na dumadami pa ang patay] kasi nakakasira. Nadami ang bilang [ng patay] sa balita,” he said.
REFUSED ADMISSION
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, also visited victims of lambanog poisoning at East Ave. Medical Center.
There are estimates some 300 people from several areas in the Southern Tagalog region fell victims of lambanog poisoning and are admitted in various hospitals ib the capital.
Lambanog is cheap alcohol drink popular during parties and holiday celebrations.
Duque said doctors had recommended admission for those confirmed to have metaboli acidosis. However, some patients refused to be admitted to the hospital.
“Dahil siguro magpapasko. They want to be with their families… Of course, may advice na binibigay sa kanila if they insist (on being discharged),” Duque explained.
A doctor also suspected another reason for their refusal was the location of the hospital.
In December 2018, the Food and Drug Administration recorded several deaths from drinking lambanog.
The agency recently found that various samples of the coconut liquor from Laguna, Rizal and Tarlac contained high levels of methanol, a highly toxic byproduct of alcohol fermentation
