Looking for something new on TV? This is it
by Jaco Joves
Philippine television has become a fair ground for both tried-and-tested and new, cutting-edge content. With the recent seismic shifts with the media landscape, TV5 kept up and surprised viewers by shaking up its line-up. And as evidenced by its next narrative offering, Suntok Sa Buwan, the Kapatid network isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.
What sets this Aga Muhlach-starrer apart from everything you’ve seen before?
1. It’s Aga Muhlach’s first role in a dramatic TV series.
Aga is no stranger to heavy dramas, but on TV, we usually see him making people smile and laugh on sitcoms and variety shows. As he takes on the role of the beleaguered Jimmy Boy Laurente, Aga brings his known thespic chops from cinemas to the small screen. And speaking of movies…
2. It’s the first movieserye on Philippine TV.
Sure, it’s in teleserye format, but the treatment is much like that of a film. Going a bit technical, director-producer Antoinette Jadaone noted: “Usually we use zoom lenses in teleseryes, but when we shoot our scenes, we use the prime lenses we’re accustomed to in making films.” Even the actors have mentioned that sequences were shot with utmost care – again, like that of a film.
3. Elijah Canlas gets his first lead role in a TV series.
The Gawad Urian winner continues to make his mainstream transition by taking on the role of Dos, or Jaime Laurente II, Jimmy Boy’s son. With a wide range of roles under his belt at such a young age – such an HIV+ teenager, balut vendor, and a feisty gamer – being an aspiring boxer will be a great addition to his repertoire.
4. We’ll see a more dramatic Maris Racal.
Maris plays Trina, a young woman who’s hoping to start fresh in Baguio. While we’ve seen her mostly in hugot stories and comedies, the 24-year-old actress will surely delight her fans as she essays versatility through a rather serious character.
5. Cignal Entertainment and Project 8 Projects are collaborating for the first time.
The team behind some of the most memorable films of the late 2010s is back to create some television magic with Cignal TV’s premier entertainment group. Directors Antoinette Jadaone and Dan Villegas take on the producers’ seats, while Project 8 Projects’ own Geo Lomuntad steps up to the challenge to helm this riveting father-and-son tale.
“We’re always gunning for boundary-pushing content, and there’s no better project to exemplify that than Suntok Sa Buwan with Project 8 Projects,” said Cignal Entertainment vice president Maria Isabel Santillan.
How far will a father and son sacrifice their hopes and dreams to protect the ones they love? Find out in Suntok sa Buwan, a collaboration between Cignal Entertainment and Project 8 Projects, premiering July 18, 7:15 PM on TV5. It airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
