(September 3, 2021) – President Rodrigo Duterte should stop defending his allies subjected to legislative inquiries to help maintain the integrity of the government, Sen. Manny Pacquiao said on Thursday.
Pacquiao advised Duterte to avoid obstructing the duty of lawmakers to investigate possible corrupt practices in public office, stressing it is part of their sworn responsibility.

Duterte has used his recent public addresses to protect his appointees involved in the overpriced procurement of face masks, face shields, and test kits for the Department of Health.
Lloyd Christopher Lao, a former Department of Budget and Management (DBM) undersecretary, took the lead in acquiring the COVID-19 supplies, awarding contracts worth P8.68 billion to Pharmally Pharmaceutical Corporation. Duterte personally met the firm’s executives in 2017 through his former economic adviser Michael Yang.
Duterte insisted that the purchased items were not overpriced since the limited availability of medical supplies last year drove the high costs. He also threatened to bar his officials from attending legislative inquiries.
Pacquiao said Duterte should allow senators to push through with the hearings to determine if corruption happened. He said the country should just abandon democracy if Duterte would continue undermining lawmakers, describing people who tolerate corruption as “psychologically imbalanced.”
“Demokrasya tayo.
Duterte and Pacquiao were close allies under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) but their relationship changed when the boxing icon started criticizing some policies of the administration, particularly on government corruption and the West Philippine Sea row.
In recent interviews, Pacquiao has said he’s willing to put Sen. Bong Go under probe of the Senate ethics committee should an official complaint be filed against Duterte’s long-time aide. Go has agreed to participate but he deflected claims of any ties with Lao or the other officials in question.
“Mag-imbestiga tayo. Hindi tayo nagiging biased,” said Pacquiao.
Pacquiao is heavily rumored to run for president in the 2022 elections but he has remained coy about his decision.
