(December 28, 2020) – Controversial Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Debold Sinas on Monday denied the circulating photos of him on social media allegedly celebrating at a Christmas party.
Sinas, who banned Christmas parties in the PNP this year in line with COVID-19 restrictions, said some people are just out to attack him.
“Negative po. Fake news po ‘yun. ‘Yung video na ’yun, alam ko retirement ng kaklase ko doon sa Tuguegarao just before (the COVID-19 pandemic). Alam ko January pa ‘yun. Wala po kaming Christmas party. Siguro may mga tao talagang walang magawa sa buhay,” said Sinas in a press conference.
The circulating photos are screenshots from a video, where Sinas, wearing a blue shirt and in a festive mood, appears to be dancing.
Sinas already drew immense public criticism last May for holding an all-out mañanita for his 55th birthday at the height of the strict quarantine in Metro Manila.
President Rodrigo Duterte, however, absolved Sinas, noting that the criticisms against him over the much-pilloried celebration are nothing compared to corruption.
“Akin na ‘yun. At kung may kasalanan siya doon, pardoned na siya. Wala akong nakitang kasalanan na masama na may moral implications,” said Duterte. “Maliit na bagay lang ‘yun. Dun ako galit sa mga corrupt.”
Duterte promoted Sinas to PNP chief last November.
Sinas, meanwhile, also confirmed on Monday that some police officers who have already been dismissed were still able to return to the PNP.
“Totoo po, may na-dismiss kami pero nakabalik po. Nakakuha sila ng orders from the court, from the NAPOLCOM (National Police Commission) o from the Civil Service Commission,” said Sinas. “Ang usapan na lang namin ni Sen. Bato (dela Rosa), higpitan pa lalo ’yung procedures.”
Sinas said that a change in leadership usually allowed previously sacked police officers to return, while admitting that some were just victims of “personalan.”
He added that if given the opportunity, the dismissed police officers should never be able to reclaim their job.
“‘Pag tinanggal mo, dapat ay na-process na ‘yun, na-evaluate na, at na-access. ’Pag na-dismiss na ‘yun, sana ’wag nang maibalik. Kasi hindi naman tayo 100% (sigurado) pagbalik niya ay matino na siya. But again, may proseso ‘yun na sinusunod,” said Sinas.
