Marcos on easing burden of teachers: ‘They teach because they want to teach’

(June 3, 2024) – Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. on Monday signed the measure granting the increase of teaching supplies allowance for public school teachers.

Marcos lauded House Bill No. 9862 or the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act as a “significant milestone” for education, as it would lessen the financial burdens of public school teachers.

“Teachers teach because they feel they have to teach and they want to teach,” said Marcos during the ceremonial signing. “That’s why we must give them the support so that they are allowed to do precisely that.”

Under the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act, the teaching supplies allowance will be doubled from P5,000 to P10,000 starting the school year (SY) 2025-2026.

For SY 2024-2025, teachers will still receive a P5,000 amount, as provided in the reconciled bill of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Marcos said the law advances the fourth component of the MATATAG Agenda of the Department of Education (DepEd), which is to “give support to teachers to teach better.”

Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio, who’s also the DepEd secretary was absent during the ceremonial signing. The reason remains unclear.

For years, public school teachers have lamented the inadequate support from the government. Advocacy groups have repeatedly called for a salary increase, citing the additional administrative chores put on educators and the rising cost of goods.

“With the passage of this law, we are easing some of the burdens that you carry each day,” added Marcos.

The lack of ample supplies has also hindered the teaching of students, leading to a learning crisis in the country. The Philippines has ranked low in annual global assessments of students.

We undergo regular audits and rigorous testing of our infrastructure’s security protocols to ensure your data is always protected;
We promptly notify you and the National Privacy Commission when sensitive personal information that may, under the circumstances, be used to enable identity fraud are reasonably believed to have been acquired by an unauthorized person; and
We let you update your information securely to keep our records accurate.

TV5 will not collect, use, or disclose your personal information for any purpose other than the purpose that you may have given your consent for.
