(May 2, 2025) – The Malacañang on Friday assured that Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. is open for a dialogue with labor groups amid calls to certify as urgent the measure seeking a P200 daily minimum wage increase.
Presidential Communications Office undersecretary Claire Castro made the remark after labor organizations on Labor Day lamented the lack of engagement with Marcos since he assumed the presidency.
“Ang pangulo ay laging bukas sa ano mang diskusyon para sa ikabubuti ng mga manggagawa at hindi (niya) isinasara ang pintuan,” said Castro in a media briefing.
On Thursday, the National Wage Coalition, composed of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino, Kilusang Mayo Uno, Nagkaisa Labor Coalition, and the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines, called on Marcos and Congress to prioritize the minimum wage hike proposal.
“Lahat ng stakeholders dapat makausap (muna) (para) malaman ano ‘yung maaaring magandang idulot na positibo at negatibo. Lahat ng stakeholder kailangan kausapin kung kakayanin din ba ng employers at kung ano ‘yung nararapat sa mga manggagawa,” added Castro.
In January, the committee of labor and employment in the House of Representatives approved a substitute bill to raise the daily minimum wage by P200.
It remains pending since it has not been reported yet for reading.
The last nationwide pay increase was approved by the late former president Corazon Aquino in 1989.
Sectoral groups and progressive lawmakers have repeatedly called for a national minimum wage to resolve disparities across the regions, stressing that mechanisms under the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards are insufficient.
Data from independent think tank IBON Foundation revealed that the nationwide average daily minimum wage of P470 falls below the estimated living cost of P1,225 for a family of five per day.
Inflation dropped to 1.8% in March from 2.1% in February, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.
