Marcos’ unity message ‘resonates’ with new coalition, claim lawmakers

(May 9, 2024) – Lawmakers from the newly formed Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas on Thursday said they anticipate more political groups to join the new coalition led by Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr. and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Marcos’ Partido Federal ng Pilipinas and Romualdez’s Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) allied together to reiterate the administration’s vision of unity. Marcos and Romualdez are cousins.

“The president’s statements are very clear that he still wants unity. He still wants everyone to be unified under the current administration because pare-pareho naman ang layunin ng bawat partido na itulak ang progreso ng ating bansa,” said Isabela Rep. Faustino Dy in a media release.

Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas was formalized on Wednesday.

The media release added that Manila Rep. Ernesto Dionisio Jr. expressed optimism that Marcos’ message of unity “resonates” with the new coalition.

“We are very fortunate to have a president who really adheres to the word unity. Talagang niyayakap niya ang lahat. So, as long as you are joining the vision of our president for progress, there is no reason para hindi ka sumama,” said Dionisio, who’s also the assistant majority leader.

Dy, who’s also the deputy majority leader, assured that the leadership of Lakas-CMD and PFP will resolve local conflicts, citing the necessity of fielding common candidates in the 2025 midterm elections.

PFP and Lakas-CMD were part of the UniTeam that dominated the 2022 elections, lifting Marcos and Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio into power.

However, the UniTeam’s unity was short-lived, as Duterte-Carpio has bickered with Marcos’ camp, including Romualdez and first lady Liza-Araneta Marcos. Meanwhile, her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, has repeatedly hurled insults toward Marcos.

Last month, Duterte’s party, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino, held a rally as a show of force and announced its senatorial bets for the 2025 midterm elections.

Marcos has continued to regurgitate his message of unity, which many political observers and progressive groups slammed as an “empty” proclamation.
