(March 17, 2025) – A lawmaker on Monday lambasted former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque for seeking asylum in the Netherlands amid his arrest order in the House of Representatives.
Roque claimed that he wants to defend former president Rodrigo Duterte in the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a legal counsel. Duterte is accused of crimes against humanity due to his brutal war on drugs.
Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas, however, stressed that Roque simply wants to evade the issues regarding his alleged involvement with a Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO).
“Atty. Roque’s asylum bid is nothing but a mockery of justice and a slap in the face of the Filipino people. Halatang ginagamit niya ang prosesong ito para lang takasan ang kaniyang pananagutan,” said Brosas in a media release.
She called on the government to coordinate with international authorities to ensure Roque faces the probe of the quad committee in the House of Representatives due to his unexplained wealth and alleged connection with Lucky South 99 Corp. in Porac, Pampanga.
“Ang sinumang sangkot sa mga ilegal na operasyon ng POGO ay dapat panagutin, lalo na’t alam natin ang mga kaso ng human trafficking, prostitusyon, at iba pang krimen na nangyayari sa mga POGO hub,” added Brosas, who’s running for senator in the 2025 midterm elections.
Based on the Philippines’ obligation to the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, any Filipino can seek asylum if he or she has a well-founded fear of persecution in his or her home country.
Roque has been in hiding since an arrest order was issued against him by the quad committee in September for refusing to submit his Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth from 2016 until 2022.
A former human rights lawyer, he is also facing human trafficking complaints before the Department of Justice due to his alleged ties with Lucky South 99 Corp.
Roque arrived in The Hague, Netherlands on Friday, along with Duterte’s daughter, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio, and Sen. Robin Padilla.
