(May 24, 2022) – The Philippines will heighten border controls and set up isolation and quarantine facilities for possible entry of monkeypox cases in the country, the health department said on Tuesday amid an outbreak of the virus in the United States and Europe.
The health department’s Epidemiology Bureau head, Althea de Guzman, assured that no monkeypox case has been detected in the country, but the health department would coordinate with the Bureau of Immigration, Bureau of Quarantine, and port authorities to watch out for travelers that may carry the virus.
“Gusto nating maging handa, by minimizing the risk na makapasok ang monkeypox sa bansa, kaya natin hina-heighten ang screening and surveillance sa ating borders,” De Guzman said.
Health authorities across the world were alarmed after over 100 suspected and confirmed cases of the monkeypox virus, which has been endemic in west and central Africa for decades, were detected in recent outbreaks in Europe and North America.
There are speculations that the virus had spread because of the easing of international borders as well as a possible mutation, although the World Health Organization clarified that it has not detected any mutation on the virus as of yet.

Although the government considered monkeypox as a notifiable disease, requiring hospitals to report to authorities if a case of the virus is found, De Guzman said the department is not yet recommending any travel restrictions with countries that have reported cases of the virus.
But they will assign designated isolation and quarantine facilities for individuals under investigation or found to have the infection.
“Ang ginagawa natin ngayon ay close monitoring nitong public health event na ito, at yung tuluy-tuloy nating pag-scan kung ano yung pagbabago ng sitwasyon globally,” she said.
Symptoms of the virus included fever and rashes. Around 1% of the cases die from the West African strain, the one found in the current outbreak outside Africa.
Dr. Marissa Alejandria, a member of the health department’s technical advisory group, said that the vaccines for smallpox can be used as protection from monkeypox, but they will need to secure supply first as there are no smallpox vaccines registered with the Food and Drug Administration yet.
“The fastest would be to secure bilateral or donations from other countries who might be able to provide us with these vaccines. But the other part is, if we are going to procure these on our own, we have a process to follow,” Alejandria said.
