‘NAKAKATAWA’ | Robredo laughs off Marcos’ claim that he was ‘robbed’ of half a term as ‘real vp’

(OCTOBER 15, 2019) — Vice President Leni Robredo took a swipe at former senator Bongbong Marcos over his claim that he was “robbed” of three years as the “real vice president,” amid the continued deferment of the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), in releasing its decision on the protest.

Robredo said she could only laugh at Marcos’ claims of fraud in the 2016 elections, where the vice president edged out the former senator by some 260,000 votes.

“Parang nakakatawa naman na siya iyong nagsasabi noon. Kasi between the two of us, parang hindi yata ako ang may ugaling mag-rob,” the vice president told reporters in a briefing in her office.

In an interview, Marcos said he was “definitely” being robbed of half a term as the second-highest official of the country.

“By conducting the cheating in the election, they robbed the proper Vice-President who won the election, myself, from the three years of service,” Marcos said.

The PET did not hand down the decision on the protest, and instead ordered both parties to comment on the preliminary committee report on the recount and revision of the votes from the three pilot provinces picked by Marcos–Camarines Sur, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental.

While Marcos and Robredo welcomed the development, both expressed frustration on the review’s slow process.

“Relieved because isasapubliko iyong committee report…pero frustrated na hindi pa rin na-dismiss,” Robredo said. “Kasi ang paniniwala talaga namin, there is no other way but to dismiss this, considering their own rules, and considering the results of the recount.”

Marcos, meanwhile, sees this as an opportunity for the electoral system to be reviewed.

“Of course it is frustrating pero what are you going to do? You have to trust the wisdom of our justices. At saka the case is complicated,” the former senator said. “Maybe after all these, kailangang balikan natin ang sistema natin ng pagprotesta… Tignan natin para mas maging maayos.”

Both camps are given 20 days upon receipt to comment on the recount report and on Marcos’ motion to nullify the votes from Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Basilan. Marcos and Robredo are also asked to submit memoranda on various issues regarding the jurisdiction of the PET to handle the case. (Randell Ritumalta/JMF)
