NEW CHIEF | Duterte appoints combat pilot as head of air force
January 16, 2020 , 06:21 PM

(JANUARY 16,2020) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday installed a combat pilot who has served as commander of the presidential air unit as the new head of the 20,000-member Philippine Air Force.

Major General Allen Paredes, head of the Air Logistics Command based in Clark Field, took over from Lt. Gen. Rozzano Briguez in a ceremony attended by the president and senior defense and military officials at Villamor Air Base.

“Under his direction and guidance, I hope that he’ll embody strength and fortitude in ensuring lasting peace in our homeland,” Duterte said in his speech.

Briguez will turn 56 years old on Friday, the mandatory retirement age in the military. He assumed the air force more than a year ago when Lt. Gen. Galileo Gerard Kintanar was forced to exit early for unknown reason.

Briguez, though, will have a civilian job waiting for him as the head of the exploration division of the Philippine National Oil Company.

Last year, Duterte fired the head of PNOC exploration office after he signed a deal with Russian oil giant Rosneft for crude oil trading oil without board approval and outside the state-owned company’s mandate.

Kintanar suffered the same fate of Vice Admiral Ronald Mercado who was replaced by Robert Empedrad due to the controversy over a South Korean frigate project.

Empedrad is due to retire next month when he also reaches the mandatory retirement age.

Defense department spokesman Arsenio Andolong said Paredes bested three other competent officers to get the too post.

“Maj. Gen. Paredes’ wide experience and sterling record will serve the PAF well as he leads it to new heights,” Andolong said. “He is a competent and outstanding military officer.”

A member of the Philippine Military Academy class of 1988, Paredes completed the air force flying school in 1990 and was a combat pilot assigned with the 15th Strike Wing based formerly in Cavite City.

He was also the commander of the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing in February 2016 during the time of then President Benigno Aquino III. He went on to serve as commander of the unit during the time of President Duterte for a couple of years..

In July 2018, Paredes was named as the Chief of Air Staff, the No. 3 man of the Air Force- the post he held before he was designated as ALC commander in February last year.

AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said: “He (Paredes) is one of the PAF’s most experienced command pilots having served the AFP for 36 years….He has gone through different echelons of air command with distinction.”

Paredes bested three fellow senior officers who were considered to become Air Force chief–AFP vice chief of staff Lt. Gen. Erickson Gloria, Air Force vice commander Maj. Gen. Pelagio Valenzuela, and Air Education and Training Command chief Maj. Gen. Ferdinand Cartujano.
