NEW INFECTIONS | Health department detects four new polio cases
January 16, 2020 , 06:18 PM

(JANUARY 16, 2020) – The Department of Health has detected four new infections of a paralysis-causing virus in the south and in the capital, bringing up the total number to 16 polio cases in the country as the authorities renewed calls to vaccinate children.

The new cases were found in three boys from two southern provinces–two boys from Maguindanao, aged two and three years old, and a two-year old from Sultan Kudarat.

The fourth case is from a three-year old boy in Quezon City in the capital region, the health department said.

All victims had high fever, diarrhea, muscle pain, asymmetric ascending paralysis, and weakness of extremities, the health department added.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III renewed his call for parents to have their children protected from the virus through immunization.

“Have your children, including those with private physicians or pediatricians, vaccinated with oral polio vaccine by health workers and bakunators,” Duque said. “Additional polio doses can provide additional protection to your children. There is no overdose with the oral polio vaccine.”

Last September, polio reemerged in the country after a three-year old girl contracted the polio virus type 2, the first case in the Philippines after 19 years.

The DOH have scheduled Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio campaigns on January 20 and February 2 in all regions in Mindanao, and on January 27 and February 7 in the National Capital Region.

The campaign aims to make sure no child is left unvaccinated and to boost those already vaccinated.

DOH, along with the local government units, aim to cover 95 percent of children in all identified areas after each vaccination round. (Randell Ritumalta/MM)
