(January 30, 2025) – Sen. JV Ejercito on Thursday called on the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) to set up a permanent substation and conduct daily patrols along Marilaque Highway in Tanay, Rizal due to the numerous accidents in the area.
Ejercito made the suggestion after a motorcycle vlogger attempting a risky stunt along the scenic road described as a “killer highway,” lost his life.
“Dapat siguro gawin na ng PNP na regular na everyday (patrol). Basta na lang kasi sila (irresponsible riders) sumisipot,” said Ejercito, a motorcycle enthusiast. “Nagulat nga ako sa ‘Superman-Superman’ (stunt). Bakit nauso ‘yan?”
On Sunday, two riders were caught on a viral video attempting the said stunt while speeding along a winding section of Marilaque Highway but eventually crashed. One of them, John Louie Arguelles, was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Authorities later confirmed that he did not have a driver’s license.
His companion, Rico Buyawan, suffered injuries. Six onlookers were also hurt.
The Land Transporation Office already summoned Buyawan to explain the issue.
“Enforcement lang talaga (ang kailangan). I would like to appeal to the PNP and LGU (local government unit) na gawing permanent na doon ‘yung nagbabantay,” said Ejercito.
The PNP-HPG reported that at least one accident occurs along the popular highway per day. Thirteen accidents have been recorded this month. Last year, 158 crashes were tallied.
Ejercito said a new law is not needed to address the matter, as drag racing is already prohibited. He, however, noted that a new racetrack is being developed in Rizal to help curb reckless riding.
“‘Yung mga gigil, doon nila ilabas sa racetrack ‘yung gigil nila. Hindi nila dapat ginagawang racetrack ang kalye.”
According to the PNP-HPG, riders often use five specific sections of Marilaque Highway for dangerous exhibitions due to the sharp curves and challenging terrain, making it difficult for authorities to chase them.
