(May 31, 2025) — The Department of Health (DOH) debunked circulating claims on social media about an alleged lockdown due to mpox cases in the country.
The health department further urged the public to remain vigilant against fake Facebook pages spreading false information about mpox.
In a public advisory released on Saturday, the DOH clarified that no lockdown has been implemented anywhere in the Philippines due to mpox.
“Walang pangangailangang magkaroon ng lockdown dahil sa mpox dahil hindi ito airborne.,” the DOH statement reads.
They reminded the public to get health-related updates only from official sources, particularly the verified Facebook page of the DOH. They also discouraged sharing unverified posts, which may cause unnecessary panic or confusion.
The health department clarified that while there have been more recorded mpox cases in 2024, particularly in April compared to May 2025, the situation remains under control. The recent spike in headlines, according to DOH, was due to increased activity and announcements from local government units (LGUs), not a worsening outbreak.
They also assured the public that it continues to coordinate closely with LGUs to provide appropriate medical services for confirmed and suspected mpox cases nationwide.
“Wala pa ring mpox Clade I-b na nakikita dito sa Pilipinas. Panay Clade II ang meron natin. Mas mababa ang mortality (pagkamatay) ng Clade II, nasa isa sa bawat sampu, kumpara sa 4-5 ng Clade I-b.”
Authorities also reminded netizens that spreading fake news, especially during public health situations, may be punishable under Philippine laws such as the Cybercrime Prevention Act and the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, if proven malicious.
