(November 10, 2022) – After a player’s rampage during a collegiate basketball game, the head of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) urged universities and colleges to look into their mental health programs to ensure that corrective measures are undertaken beyond suspensions.
CHED chairperson Popoy De Vera III stressed that universities and colleges play a critical role in the formation of their students, noting that the repeated offenses of John Amores of the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers means there’s something wrong.
“I am troubled by what happened,” said De Vera on One PH’s Sa Totoo Lang. “Ang mga pamantasan, universities, and colleges, parang pangalawang magulang ng mga estudyante. Responsibilidad ng mga pamantasan na hubugin nang tama ang kanilang mga estudyante.”
On Tuesday, Amores ran amok against the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Blazers in their National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) matchup. With 3:22 left in the fourth quarter, the NCAA decided to halt the game, which the CSB won, 71-51.
It was not the first time that Amores was involved in such an incident. In a preseason tournament last July, the hotheaded forward also punched Mark Belmonte of the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons. UP filed a criminal complaint against Amores as Belmonte sustained injuries. UP also claimed that JRU did not mete out the necessary sanctions after the incident.
Amores has also been involved in verbal altercations with opponents several times in the past.
After his punching spree against CSB, JRU decided that Amores will no longer suit up for the team for the rest of the season apart from being barred from joining their practices. The NCAA also suspended him indefinitely while several other players were also punished.
“Violence has no place in the NCAA. The ManCom (management committee) condemns, and will not tolerate, any acts of violence that will endanger our athletes, participants, officials, supporters, and the public. The safety of everyone is our primordial concern,” read the NCAA’s ruling issued on Wednesday.
De Vera stressed that JRU must reflect on what happened because of the pattern of violence committed by Amores, who has yet to address the incident. He added that JRU should take concrete actions.
“(Universities) must really be responsible and very serious about the conduct of their students. Kapag may nangyaring ganyan, ibig sabihin may pagkukulang somewhere at ‘yan ang kailangan tingnan hindi lang ng NCAA kundi ‘yung mga eskuwelahan mismo,” said De Vera.
He also recognized that student-athletes must uphold the values of sportsmanship, friendship, and camaraderie.
JRU, in its statement, stressed that it will cooperate in the probe by the NCAA and apologized to the basketball community.
“Kung may pattern, ibig sabihin mabigat ‘yung problema ng bata. Ang responsibilidad diyan ay nasa pamantasan to do the necessary counseling, corrective action, etc.,” said De Vera.
