(February 8, 2025) – Presidential son and Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Sandro Marcos defended his decision to be the first to sign the fourth impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio.
He cited alleged assassination threats against his family as the primary reason for his support.
“Of course, I’ll be the first one to sign,” Marcos said, emphasizing that the public should not be surprised by his decision.
He pointed to past remarks made by Duterte-Carpio directed at his parents, President Bongbong Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, including threats involving the remains of his grandfather, the late former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
“Kung sa sabihin ng tao na gusto niyang hukayin ‘yung lolo mo at itapon yung katawan sa West Philippine Sea, sasabihin niya gusto niyang patayin ang pangulo at ang First Lady na ang aking magulang… eh bakit naman nagugulat ang tao na pipirma ako d’yan?”
Marcos also shared that his father advised him to uphold his duty as a congressman and follow his constitutional mandate.
He clarified that he was not the initiator of the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte-Carpio but chose to support it based on his convictions.
Congressmen also fired back at VP Sara’s denial of threatening the lives of the First Family.
This is the primary article of impeachment to be presented in the Senate.
Other lawmakers, including Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña, slammed Duterte’s response to the impeachment case. “God save the Philippines from the Dutertes, especially VP Sara,” Cendaña remarked, adding that Duterte’s statement trivializing her impeachment compared to going through a breakup showed a lack of accountability.
According to Senate President Chiz Escudero, the impeachment case— which includes allegations of threats, corruption, and misuse of confidential funds— is set for deliberation in the Senate after the 2025 midterm elections in May.
