(August 4, 2024) – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Sunday said it already contained the oil spill from the three sunken ships in Bataan.
MT Terra Nova sank off the coast of Limay last July 25, remains at the site of the incident. The vessel was carrying over one million liters of fuel.
“Naka-capping na siya, so may mga paunti-unti pa rin na lumalabas diyan kasi mas malalim, mas mataas ‘yung pressure. Then ‘yung pipings niya may mga pailan-ilan na lumalabas,” said PCG Bataan station commander Michael John Encina.
He maintained that efforts continue to prevent further environmental damage with the deployment of oil spill booms in Manila Bay.
Last Sunday, the PCG confirmed that MTKR Jason Bradley sank off the coast of Mariveles, aggravating the oil spill in the area.
Just three days later, MV Mirola 1 also sank in Mariveles.
“Nalinis na natin ‘yan and hinihintay na lang natin ‘yung makukuhang salvor ng may-ari. Kung hindi siya hahanap, ang coast guard na ang mag-aalis nito,” said Encina.

He clarified that MTKR Jason Bradley has shown no signs of oil leakage. He added that the area around the vessel is also protected by oil spill booms.
The siphoning of 5,500 liters of diesel from the tanker is expected to begin on Monday, according to Encina.
An investigation is underway regarding the illegal voyage of MV Mirola 1.
Last Friday, the Philippine Ports Authority confirmed that unlike MT Terra Nova and MTKR Jason Bradley, MV Mirola 1 had no clearance records.
Despite the oil spill, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Central Luzon assured the public that fish from Bataan, Pampanga, and Bulacan remain safe to eat.
“Sa aming sensory evaluation, wala kami naamoy na may langis o may nalasahan na may langis,” said BFAR Central Luzon director Wilfredo Cruz.
Results from additional testing will be released on Friday, which may determine if a fishing ban will be imposed in the affected areas for public safety.
