OVERFLOW THREAT | NWRB says water from Ipo dam might spill to Bulacan towns

AUGUST 9, 2019 — The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) is warning residents in Bulacan of a possible overflow from the Ipo Dam.

The board officials said the water might spill if the rains continue and the level reaches 101.30 meters. After the week-long storm Hanna exited the country on Friday, the dam’s water rose to 101.01 meters.

NWRB officials said they plan to release the excess water from the dam once the level hits the higher mark to prevent flashfloods in the low-lying towns.

“Depende sa cubic meters per second na ilalabas nila na tubig. Makinig lang ang publiko sa ipapalabas na impormasyon ng disaster risk reduction office,” said Liz Munggal, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Towns who might be affected by the overflow include Norzagaray, Angat, San Rafael, Bustos, Baliwag, Plaridel, Pulilan, Calumpit, Hagonoy and Paombong.

To prevent a spillover outside Bulacan, the NWRB said it slowed the release of water from Angat Dam, which supplies water to Metro Manila.

“Mas maliit kasi ang storage capacity ng Ipo Dam. Yung ulan na dumadaloy sa Ipo Dam ang nilalabas papuntang Metro Manila,” said Ronald Padua, chairman of Common Purpose Facilities.

Water in Angat Dam also rose further to 170.88 meters due to incessant rains.

“Kahit nagbawas ng release sa Angat Dam, yung pangangailangan ng Metro Manila ay napupunuan ng runoff water mula sa Ipo Dam,” Padua said.

The NWRB said its officials will still discuss if more water from the Angat Dam will be released.

They hope to collect more rainwater to also provide the needs of the agriculture sector.

“As much as possible makaabot above 180 meters para natutugnan natin ‘yung pwede maibalik sa suplay sa Metro Manila at irigasyon,” NWRB Executive Director Sevillo David Jr. said.
