(SEPTEMBER 10, 2019) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday sacked Jose Antonio Goitia, the executive director of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), saying he would throw him in the river for the fishes to feast.
Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo in a statement said Goitia’s firing is pursuant to the president’s “continuing mandate to eradicate graft and corruption” and ensuring that public officials conduct themselves in a manner “worthy of public trust.”
Duterte, meanwhile, in his speech late Tuesday, had some harsh words for the sacked official.
“Tinalian ko muna ng angkla, ihulog ko itong p******** sa Pasig River para tumaba lalo ang tilapia,” Duterte said referring to Goitia.
Duterte also bared that Goitia had been expecting to be transferred to the Bureau of Customs.
“Tinitignan ko lahat. Inuna ko [‘yung executive director] kasi ganito…he talks about siya ang ilagay ko sa Customs at naghingian na ng mga pera to those connected sa Customs,” he said.
The Palace also advised Goitia to return all official documents, papers and properties in his possession to the Office of the Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Administrative Services of the commission.
Operations director Anshari Lomodag will take over as officer-in-charge.
“We hope that this shall serve as another example that this administration does not, and will never, tolerate corrupt practices in the bureaucracy and in public service,” Panelo said in the same statement.
PRRC, meanwhile, said it had followed the president’s orders on Monday regarding the change in leadership.
It also assured interim officials are in place and that Goitia’s firing will not hamper daily operations of the commission.
Goitia was appointed by the president as the executive director in 2017.
Duterte last week transferred the chairmanship duties of the commission to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. (Randell Ritumalta/JMF)
