June 16, 2019 – President Rodrigo Duterte is set to meet the crew of the rammed fishing vessel F/B Gem-ver 1 on Monday, the mayor of the municipality of San Jose in Occidental Mindoro told News5.
Mayor Romulo Festin said that President Duterte wants to personally talk to Junel Insigne, the captain of the fishing vessel and Richard Blaza, the cook and the only crew who was awake when the ramming incident happened.
They will be accompanied by representatives from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Festin, however, said that they are still confirming if the boat owner will also go to Manila to meet with the president.
Meanwhile, Vice President Leni Robredo urged the Department of Foreign Affairs to demand from the Chinese government to find those responsible for the incident and face trial in Philippine courts.
“Those involved must be made accountable in accordance with the pertinent international treaties and Philippine laws,” Robredo said in a statement.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the irresponsible actions of the Chinese crew involved in the incident, and express our most profound disappointment at the refusal of the Chinese government to acknowledge the culpability of those responsible for sinking the Philippine fishing vessel and abandoning its crew,” she expressed.
China earlier admitted that its vessel rammed F/B Gem-ver 1 in Recto Bank.
