(June 21, 2025) – President Bongbong Marcos distanced himself from the impending impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, saying the proceedings are entirely the decision of the Congress.
Marcos made the remark on his BBM Podcast Episode 2 in response to claims that the delay for VP Duterte’s impeachment involved political interests.
“Lahat ng impeachment process nasa lehislatura ‘yan. It’s between Congress [House of Representatives] and the Senate,” said Marcos in an exclusive interview with News5 and One PH anchor Cheryl Cosim.
The President stressed that he chose not to intervene in the impeachment, stressing he was focused on executive matters.
“Wala naman akong papel doon sa impeachment,” he added. “If a president chooses to do that, I choose not to.”
During the 2022 national elections, the president and Duterte ran under the now-abolished UniTeam.
Moreover, according to the 1987 Constitution, only the House of Representatives can initiate an impeachment, while the Senate has the sole power to try and decide the case.
Both chambers of Congress have been trading tirades on who caused the impeachment delays after the Senate remanded the articles of impeachment back to the House of Representatives.
The lower chamber already certified the constitutionality of the articles of impeachment but deferred accepting the remanded complaint to seek clarifications.

Last February, Duterte was impeached by a record 215 lawmakers in the lower chamber due to alleged irregularities in her use of confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, which she previously headed, worth P612.5 million combined.
The Vice President was also alleged of plotting to assassinate Marcos, first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, among grounds cited in the articles of impeachment.
