(July 10, 2020) – Confirmed coronavirus cases in the country are now a few rungs shy of hitting the 53,000 mark after the health department reported 1,233 additional infections on Friday.
The total number of COVID-19 cases now stand at 52,914, according to latest data from the Department of Health (DOH). Of these numbers, 42 more fatalities were recorded a day after it reported zero additional casualties of COVID-19.
But the DOH clarified that four deaths should have been reported on July 9.
Among the 42 fatalities newly recorded, 27 happened this month, while 12 occurred in June.
Majority of the deaths — 36 in total — came from Cebu, which is under strict lockdown for increasing infections. More than half of those who died were senior citizens, who are more at risk dun to co-morbidity issues.
Beverlo Ho, director for the DOH health and promotions communications service, clarified that the rise in the death toll was manageable despite the continuing increase of cases.
More corrections were also noted, with 131 recoveries supposedly for Thursday, while 73 duplicate cases were removed for today’s bulletin.
Despite the adjustments, the Philippines still has the highest number of active cases in Southeast Asia, with 38,324 undergoing treatment or are in quarantine.
Of the 1,233 cases reported on Friday, 848 are considered fresh. Around half of these originated in Metro Manila, while 30 came from Central Visayas. Late cases have reached 385.
