PINATUBO ERUPTION | PHIVOLCS says Mount Pinatubo has a weak eruption

(November 30, 2021) – A long dormant volcano, which came to life in 1991, erupted on Tuesday, the state volcanology agency said, cautioning the public not to venture too close to the area as it evaluates the source of the incident.

The Pinatubo Volcano Network under the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded seismic and infrasound signals of a weak explosion between 12:09 and 12:13 at noon in Mt. Pinatubo, which produced a plume detected by the Himarawi-8 satellite.

PHIVOLCS was puzzled by possible eruptions from the volcano because of the low seismic activity in the volcano.

“The seismic and infrasound signals are not typical of known volcanic processes and are currently being evaluated together with other potential sources, e.g. aircraft activity, ordnance disposal, and others,” PHIVOLCS said in a statement.

Early this month, a survey of the volcano’s crater lake yielded low volcanic carbon dioxide flux of 257 tonnes per day, indicating low magmatic activity beneath the edifice.

While evaluation is ongoing, the agency advised local government units to prohibit entry into Pinatubo’s crater until it can determine the source of the explosion event. It also requested to report any related information on the incident.

“Communities and local government units surrounding Pinatubo are reminded to be always prepared for both earthquake and volcanic hazards and to review, prepare, and strengthen their contingency, emergency, and other disaster preparedness plans,” PHIVOLCS said.

Mt. Pinatubo was known for its massive eruption after it had been dormant for centuries in June 1991, which is considered to be one of the largest eruptions in the world in the past century, killing over 840 people in Central Luzon and injuring many others.
