(August 23, 2021) – Due to his loss to Yordenis Ugas, Sen. Manny Pacquiao might have a difficult time broadening his support base for the 2022 elections if he pushes through with his rumored presidential campaign, a political analyst said on Monday.
Atty. Michael Henry Yusingco of Ateneo Policy Center said Pacquiao would have used a win on Sunday “to boost” the support he could obtain from the people for his electoral bid.
“Kung nanalo siya puwede pa niyang palawakin ang sumusuporta sa kanya and then strengthen them, translating them into votes. Pero dahil natalo siya, medyo question mark na ngayon kung kaya pa bang gawin ng kampo niya na mag-mobilize ng maraming tao at ma-translate into votes,” said Yusingco in an interview with News 5.
Yusingco believes that politics was the primary factor behind Pacquiao’s decision to fight a major boxing match since he could have opted for lesser fights after a two-year break. Before facing Ugas, Pacquiao last fought in 2019, notching a split decision win over Keith Thurman.
Various groups, politicians, and supporters have expressed appreciation for Pacquiao following his unanimous decision loss to Ugas. But Yusingco said this could have a “double meaning” as some people might not want him to stay in politics anymore.
Yusingco also thinks the “emotional high” would die down within one week since the public also faces too many issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“When he comes back, if he decides to run, the real questions will be posed again: Ano bang track record mo? Ano bang plataporma mo sa gobyerno? We’re going to reckon with reality sooner than if he had won,” said Yusingco, adding the health crisis will play a huge factor in the voters’ decision for the 2022 elections.
Pacquiao would also need to quickly fix his political affiliation due to his rift with the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, led by his rival Department of Energy secretary Alfonso Cusi.
Vice President Leni Robredo held political talks with Pacquiao last month before he flew to Las Vegas, anticipating another round of discussions in the coming weeks. 1SAMBAYAN, which previously rejected the boxing icon, is also now “open” to his inclusion in the list of nominees as long as he follows the process.
Yusingco, meanwhile, noted that Pacquiao’s supporters already have a “different tenor” in terms of expressing their support for the eight-division world champion, contrary to his fights in the past.
“Ang tenor is hanggang dito na lang kami sa pagsuporta. Maraming salamat. Kung nanalo siya, ang nai-imagine ko is mae-engganyo ang supporters na meron pa tayong dapat maipanalo. Hindi na ganun eh. Hindi na ganun ang tenor,” said Yusingco.
