(October 30, 2020) -The Philippines is bracing for the most powerful storm to hit the country’s rice-producing region this year as Typhoon Rolly further intensified as it moved closer to the main island of Luzon, weather and disaster officials said on Friday.
Internationally known as Goni, the 18th weather disturbance to enter the Philippines was estimated at 980 kms east of Casiguran town, Aurora as if 4 pm.
Weather forecasters said Rolly has intensified with center winds of 185 kph and gusts up to 230 kph. It is moving westward at 20 kph.
Disaster officials have warned residents to move to safer areas as the typhoon can whip up storm surges in coastal areas, bring torrential rains that may cause landslides and floods.
Some local officials are preparing to evacuate residents to shelter areas while local power distribution companies are shutting down electricity as a precaution.
The weather bureau said that Visayas, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi will deal with cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms that could cause possible flash floods or landslides during moderate to heavy rains.
PAGASA also said the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Cagayan Valley will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms due to the northeasterly surface windflow that could cause possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers caused by the localized thunderstorms.
For those areas, small vessels must take precautionary measures, while it is not advisable for “inexperienced mariners” to travel, said PAGASA.
Typhoon Rolly could leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday morning, November 3.
Rolly will come days after Quinta left a trail of death and destruction in Southern Luzon.
At least 22 people drowned and killed by fallen trees and more than 200,000 people were affected.
Crop and infrastructure damage could reach a billion pesos, local officials said.
Another weather disturbance is brewing in the Pacific and may affect the country next week
An average of 20 typhoons visits the Philippines every year.
The most destructive was Haiyan, known locally as Yolanda which killed more than 7,000 people and left 200,000 families homeless in November 2013.
