(May 28, 2025) – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reiterated his openness to reconciling with the Dutertes but emphasized that reconciliation talks should be unconditional.
This follows statements from some Duterte allies suggesting that former president Rodrigo Duterte must first be brought back to the Philippines before any talks for reconciliation can take place.
According to the President, if the intention to reconcile is sincere, the focus should be on discussing and resolving the underlying issues.
“That’s not how reconciliation works. You don’t put conditions to reconcile,” Marcos said.
That’s not reconciliation. That’s not even a negotiation. That’s demanding. Those are setting conditions,” he added.
When asked how far he is willing to go to pursue reconciliation, the President said he could not pre-judge.
“Put it this way, I don’t know what will come up, what’s needed. You cannot pre-judge,” he said.
Marcos added.
It can be recalled that Pres. Marcos previously said in a podcast interview that he is open to reconciling with the Dutertes.
The President is back in the Philippines after attending the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
