QUARANTINED | 16 more Filipinos test positive for COVID-19 in Japan cruise ship
February 17, 2020 , 11:10 AM

FEBRUARY 17, 2020 – Sixteen more Filipinos have been found infected with the deadly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID -19) in a cruise ship under quarantine at a port in Yokohama, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday.

Citing reports from the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, the DFA said the number of affected Filipinos onboard Diamond Princess has risen to 27 people.

More than 300 other passengers and crew were also confirmed to be affected by the COVID-19.

“The Embassy is in close coordination with the relevant Philippine and Japanese government agencies, and representatives of the World Health Organization and Princess Cruises to ensure that the needs of the Filipino crew and passengers are met and to facilitate their return to the Philippines,” the DFA said in a statement.

The Japanese Health Ministry also announced that all onboard will be tested beginning today for the disease so the test results will be available by the time the ship’s quarantine period ends.

Around 3,700 people onboard the Carnival Corp ship were placed in quarantine and given health screenings since February 5.

The Philippine government is already preparing to bring home around 500 Filipino crew members of the ship, the labor secretary said based on news reports. The date of their arrival has yet to be determined.

The US government also has plans to airlift its citizens from the cruise ship.

As of the end of Sunday, the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in mainland China has hit 1,770.

The confirmed infections, meanwhile, has ballooned to 70,548 of which 10,844 people have been treated and released from hospital.
