(May 26, 2022) – Susan Roces, the “Queen of Philippine Movies”, on Thursday was laid to rest beside the tomb of her action hero husband at the Manila North Cemetery, drawing a huge crowd of supporters, friends, and family members who expressed appreciation for the renowned artist until her final moments.
Roces—known as Jesusa Purificacion Levy Sonora in real life—died due to cardiopulmonary arrest on Friday, according to her daughter, Senator Grace Poe. She was 80.
Roces’ remains were interred right beside the tomb of her husband, Fernando Poe Jr, a national artist also known as the “King of Philippine Movies” who died in 2004. Her family held a mass at the Heritage Park in Taguig City before the funeral convoy to the cemetery which started at around 11 a.m.
Many of Roces’ supporters flocked to the cemetery to anticipate the scheduled interment of the movie icon, who remained active in the industry until her last years.

She had appeared in the longest-running television drama “Ang Probinsiyano” where she played the grandmother of the lead actor, Coco Martin.
On the last night of the wake, several high-profile politicians and public personalities paid respects to the versatile actress.
President Rodrigo Duterte paid his final respects on Wednesday night where he got the chance to talk to the Roces& daughter, Senator Poe, his former rival in the 2016 presidential elections. Duterte was accompanied by executive secretary Salvador Medialdea and long-time aide-turned-senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go.
In an earlier statement, the Malacañang said the death of the actress was a “big loss” for the country’s entertainment industry.
“Her death is truly a big loss not only to the local entertainment industry but to all the people whose lives the beloved icon had touched and affected,” said acting presidential spokesperson Martin Anadanar.
Roces began her movie career as a child actress in the film “Mga Bituin ng Kinabukasan” in 1952.
Over the course of her career, she was recognized twice as Best Actress by the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards (FAMAS) for “Maligno” in 1977 and “Gumising ka … Maruja” in 1978. Roces was nominated as Best Actress for at least 11 times from 1966 to 1998.
Additionally, Roces received the “Huwarang Bituin” award in 2004 and the Iconic Movie Queen of Philippine Cinema award in 2015. She got her FAMAS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
Roces had maintained her popularity until her final years as she played the role of “Lola Flora” in “Ang Probinsyano” starred by Coco Martin in ABS-CBN.
But Roces also made her mark in the political scene as she actively campaigned for her husband who ran but lost to former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004. FPJ placed second with 11.78 million votes.
Senator Ping Lacson took to social media to recall the iconic line dropped by Roces back then: “Ang sinungaling ay kapatid ng magnanakaw.”
“How can we forget such feisty words from the queen herself, sans script or direction from anyone behind the camera. It was all from Ms. Susan Roces—a spontaneous and honest expression of the sad state of politics in the country,” wrote Lacson on Twitter.
Roces had also supported her daughter in her bid for the presidency six years as an independent candidate in 2016. Poe finished third with 9.1 million votes next to Duterte and former interior secretary Mar Roxas.
Poe, her only daughter, said her mother has already showed hints of her weakening condition. She described her final conversation with the actress as something “symbolic” as they talked about the recently passed law that recognizes foundlings as Filipinos.
“Syempre, malungkot kami pero ‘pag iniisip naming wala nang sakit, wala nang hirap, at higit sa lahat, kasama na niya ang mga magulang niya at saka ang tatay ko. ‘Yun talaga ang true love niya eh,” said Poe.
