(June 17, 2021) – Following his recent announcement of running in the 2022 elections, human rights lawyer Atty. Chel Diokno on Wednesday said he is open for any position, adding he learned a lot from his failed senatorial bid two years ago.
Diokno, one of the six nominees named by 1SAMBAYAN as possible candidates for the 2022 elections, said running for president is still a possibility.
“Bukas ang loob ko saan mang puwesto. Hindi ko naman pinapangarap ‘yung pinakamataas na puwesto na pagiging pangulo, although that is also within the realm of possibility,” said Diokno on One PH’s ‘Wag Po.
While 1SAMBAYAN has received flak recently after the group’s “underwhelming” Independence Day announcement, Diokno said his support remains.
“Sabi nila ang election ay will of the people, hindi naman isang tao ‘yan. I respect the process of 1SAMBAYAN, importante na magkasama-sama ang oposisyon. And whoever will be chosen, should really try to stand behind them,” said Diokno.
While some political analysts have argued that an early announcement of candidacy for the 2022 elections might be a disadvantage, Diokno explained he wants to state his intentions right away.
“Sa akin kasi prangkahan na tayo kung ganun, I would rather put my cards on the table, at ganun ang personality ko kaya ayun ang nangyari. Siguro sila may sari-sariling sabihin natin agenda o game plan, makikita na rin natin ‘yan sa mga darating na buwan,” said Diokno.
Diokno, a staunch critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, ran for senator under Otso Diretso in the 2019 midterm elections but finished only 21st with around 6.3 million votes.
“Siyempre may halong disappointment ‘yun, pero alam ko naman na from the start na uphill battle ‘yan. And sabi ko nga nun, after lumabas ang resulta ng eleksyon, there are some defeats that are victories in themselves. Hindi ko rin akalain na I will get that many votes and that I would get the support of a large part of our sector,” said Diokno.
Diokno added because of his loss, he is now more experienced when it comes to politics. He added the switch to online platforms in terms of campaigning will give the opposition a better chance in the 2022 elections.
“Sabi nga nila sa halalan dalawa talaga ‘yung giyera diyan, ‘yung air war and ground war. Dun sa air war medyo nag-iba ang usapin diyan kasi nawala na nga ‘yung isang malaking network tapos naging halos lahat nasa lockdown, online lahat. That made it a level playing field kasi pagdating sa internet, hindi naman tulad ng TV ‘yan na malaki ang gastos para sa advertisement. I think it’s a big advantage for the opposition,” said Diokno.
Diokno garnered only 1% of preferential votes for vice president in the Pulse Asia survey last April, placing him in ninth place.
