RELIEF OPERATIONS | VP hits Mocha Uson for sharing ‘fake news’
January 16, 2020 , 01:45 PM

JANUARY 16, 2020 – The vice president on Thursday strongly criticized a government official and popular social media blogger for spreading false news about her relief operations in communities affected by Taal volcano’s intense activities.

Leni Robredo said Mocha Uson, a blogger and a staunch supporter of Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte, has been maligning her office when she shared a fabricated article in her social media account about a fictitious distribution of bread and water to Taal evacuees.

“Bakit hinahayaan natin na ‘yung nagpapakalat ng fake news, sinuswelduhan pa ng pamahalaan?,” Robredo told reporters during a community-based drug rehabilitation summit in Caloocan. “Pera natin ‘to, hindi naman pero ng kung sinong government official.”

Uson has been appointed as deputy administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and her official Facebook Page shared an article from a pro-Duterte website saying the opposition leader is spending more money on media coverage than the relief goods.

The original article, posted in the Mindanation.com website, said Robredo had only distributed five pieces of “pandesals” and a bottle of water during a relief operation in the southern Luzon this week.

The pro-Duterte website described itself as the “official blogsite of Mindavote, an online community of Duterte supporters.”

Robredo said the post is an insult to several individuals who have donated and volunteered in her office to help packed relief goods for hundreds of displaced victims.

“‘Yung volunteers ang makasasabi kung ano ang laman ng relief packs,” she said. “Ako parang masyado namang petty na pag-awayan pa namin ang laman.”

This is not the first time Uson had been called out for sharing false claims on her social media.

In 2018, a youth group filed an administrative complaint against her before the Office of the Ombudsman during her stint as Presidential Communications Assistant Secretary.

Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, one of Duterte’s fiercest critics, also filed criminal raps against her for spreading “fake news” regarding his supposed offshore accounts in 2017.

Months later, Uson resigned from her post after the agency’s budget had been stalled at the House of Representatives for skipping deliberations.

She ran but lost in the 2019 mid-term elections as a party-list representative. (Karen Macalalad/MM)
